Cryptocurrency investor and Tether co-founder Brock Pierce is contemplating a return to Hong Kong, hinting at new ventures as the city seeks to revitalize its cryptocurrency sector. During the Solowin and Sequire Asia Investor Summit, Pierce expressed his enthusiasm for the recent regulatory advancements in Hong Kong and suggested that the region is poised for significant developments in the crypto space.

Hong Kong has been proactive in establishing a regulatory framework that is inviting to the cryptocurrency industry. The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong has started accepting applications for crypto trading platform licenses, which is part of a broader effort to position Hong Kong as a hub for digital assets in Asia. This move is seen as pivotal, especially as mainland China maintains a stringent ban on commercial cryptocurrency activities.
Pierce’s interest in Hong Kong is not new. He has a history of business ventures in the city and sees potential in areas like trade finance, which could be enhanced by a digital dollar stablecoin. His optimistic outlook is further fueled by his belief that China will eventually have to open up to cryptocurrencies, describing it as “inevitable” and merely a question of “when” rather than “if”.
However, Hong Kong’s ambitions face challenges, including high operational costs and a licensing regime that might deter some companies. Yet, Pierce remains hopeful, viewing these as temporary hurdles that will diminish as the policies evolve.
