McDonald’s to enter metaverse this Lunar New Year

January 20, 2023

Global food giant McDonald’s has collaborated with Karen X Cheng, a well-known digital content creator for a Lunar New Year campaign. Cheng’s work has time and again gone viral and incorporates AI and AR, as well as a variety of cutting-edge technologies.

The 30-second commercial is based on Cheng’s fond childhood memories of the occasion and includes a QR code call-to-action that directs viewers to additional campaign components.

McDonald’s senior director of cultural engagement strategy, Elizabeth Campbell, said the fast food giant is hoping the “tech-forward” initiative will celebrate the holiday while also supporting the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

Users can explore a range of activities through virtual reality, augmented reality, and 3D animation. In the metaverse, there is something for everyone to enjoy, including VR zoos, cooking competitions, and traditional Chinese games like Weiqi and Mahjong.

Additionally, McDonald’s created an individualisable 3D avatar that allows each user to explore the world. Users can also message friends and share photos with them using the in-app messenger. However, viewers can visit the official McDonald’s website right away to enter the metaverse.

Karen X Cheng is an entrepreneur and digital storyteller. She has contributed to projects in a wide range of sectors, including media and technology.
